Miracle of the Eucharist of Lanciano

Lanciano is a small, medieval town , nestled in from the coast of the Adriatic Sea in Italy, halfway between San Giovanni Rotondo and Loreto.  Everything about Lanciano smacks of the Eucharistic Miracle.  Even  the name of the town was changed from Anxanum (in ancient times), to Lanciano, meaning "THE LANCE".  Tradition has it that the centurion, named Longinus,  who thrust the Lance into the side of Jesus, striking Him in the Tip of His Heart from which He shed blood and water, (in the Gospel account of the Crucifixion (Mk 15:29)) was from this town.  After seeing the events which followed the piercing of Jesus' heart, the darkening of the sun, and the earthquake, he believed that Christ was the Savior.  A more physical sign, however, was that Longinus had had poor eyesight, and after having touched his eyes with the water and blood from the side of Jesus, his eyesight was restored. 

 What a perfect parallel the actions of the Centurion were to the Eucharistic Miracle.  He touched the Heart of Jesus, was healed, and converted.  He gave up the Army, went to Cappadocia, and was martyred for the faith.  He is known now as Saint Longinus.  His feast day is celebrated on March 15.

The church of the Eucharistic Miracle is located in the center of the town.  But what is the center of the town today was the outskirts of the town back in the Eighth Century, when the Eucharistic Miracle occurred.  At the time, it was called the Church of St. Legontian and St. Domitian, and was under the custody of the Basilian Monks, of the Greek Orthodox Rite.  This was prior to the Great Schism of 1054.

St. Paschal Baylon - Taken from Saints and Lovers of the Eucharist

St. Paschal Baylon is a contradictory sign in the Church. He was never a priest, and yet his name is synonymous with the Eucharist. For a Lay person to be given the official title of Patron of all Eucharistic Congresses and Confraternities of the Blessed Sacrament, how could this be?

When we wrote of other Saints and powerful Men and Women in the Church, you complained we had not written enough about lay persons who had become Saints. Well, here we have not only a lay person who became a Saint, but he is Saint of the Eucharist, Patron to Eucharistic Congresses and Confraternities of the Blessed Sacrament. Our last two Popes, in particular, have been turning to the laity to evangelize, telling us by virtue of our Baptism, we are mandated to evangelize. It is not only their Church, as we so conveniently used to pass the buck. We are part of them. It is our Church, and we can lose her or save her. It is up to us.

When a Eucharistic Minister asked a priest: What should we do if we see someone leaving the Altar with the Eucharist in his hand? And he replied, "Nothing, it is between that person and the Lord." What do you think St. Paschal Baylon would have done? So do we visit Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament? Do we sign up for only one hour per month to spend with the Lord, so that our church can have Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration? What do you think St. Paschal would have done?

He never had as close a relationship with the Eucharist as a priest would have. And while we were surprised to hear it, we have been saying for years that the laity is the strength behind the Church. And while we don’t put ourselves in the same category as St. Paschal Baylon, in the Catholic world, our name is synonymous with the Eucharist also. Another interesting thing about Paschal Baylon is that outside his little town in Spain, his name is virtually unknown.

We first heard the name Paschal Baylon when we lived in Westlake Village in California. Our parish church was St. Jude’s. But the neighboring town, Thousand Oaks, has as their parish church, St. Paschal Baylon. So we knew there was a Paschal Baylon, and that he was a Saint. We must say, after having read about him, he is a most fascinating Saint, and truly a Powerful Man in our Church.

I would just like to say thank you for your first This Is My Body, This Is My Blood, Miracles of the Eucharist Book (I plan to read the next one soon).  I have been a Catholic from birth.  I spent some time away form the Church for awhile, but finally came back 2 years ago this June.  Since then I have been trying to learn more and more about my faith and have tried to surround myself with people who can help me grow spiritually.  One of these friends gave me your book.  I am not sure how to describe what I thought about the Eucharist before your book.  I knew I believed Jesus was in the Eucharist, he was the Eucharist, but maybe I took that for granted or maybe I just never really got it.  Either way, I know I never believed to the extent I do now.  I want to cry every time I go to Mass when I think about how wonderful our Lord is to us and how forgiving and how patient he is and that he is there in front of me saying everything is going to be okay.  I thank God for opening my heart to the words in your book.  Thank you for taking the time to research these Miracles and thank you for writing this book.  May God bless your ministry and may God bless you.
